Welcome to Baton Health® - A Letter from Our Founder
For too long, we’ve been told that health is something managed by institutions—something we wait for rather than something we own. But at Baton Health®, we believe that health is not just a system. It’s how we live, how we nourish ourselves, and the wisdom we pass down through generations.
What if we stopped waiting?
What if we, our families, and our communities became the credential for our own health?
That’s why Baton Health® exists.
My journey into health began at a young age, watching my family take on the challenge of building a vineyard and orchard in a place others deemed "impossible." That experience instilled in me a deep appreciation for resilience, innovation, and the power of community—values that would shape my approach to health and well-being.
The journey continued in places you might not expect: the YMCA, Stanford University, and community gardens. Through my work with Stanford’s Health Improvement Program (HIP) and the Healthy Lifestyles Program (HLP) at the YMCA, I witnessed firsthand how people could transform their well-being when equipped with the right tools and support. It wasn’t about quick fixes or fad diets; it was about empowering individuals and communities to cultivate sustainable, lifelong habits.
But something was missing.
Through CHLI Community-at-Large assessments, we discovered that many communities, especially in low-income and rural areas, lacked access to basic wellness infrastructure—things like walkable spaces, fresh food options, and health education in schools.
The data confirmed what I already knew: we don’t just need more hospitals—we need healthier environments where prevention is possible.
Through assessments, we discovered that many communities lacked basic wellness infrastructure, including:
- Walkable spaces
- Fresh food options
- Health education in schools
In 2016, I founded Baton Health® to make a healthier environment possible.
From Farms to Food Banks: Building Something Stronger, Together
At my home, we grow food not just for ourselves but for our neighbors. This commitment extends to Baton Health®, where we believe food is medicine and access to fresh, local food is a fundamental right. Over the years, we have partnered with the Edmonds Food Bank, Snohomish County Soil Conservation District, and other local groups in donating thousands of pounds of fresh produce to ensure that no one goes without the nourishment they need. We’ve seen what’s possible when communities work together.
At Baton Health®, we believe:
- ✅ Food is medicine—it should be accessible, local, and part of daily life.
- ✅ Prevention should come first—health belongs in schools, workplaces, and homes, not just hospitals.
- ✅ Healthcare providers deserve better. They can be more effective when their work environments, insurance protocols, and professional growth opportunities support prevention.
We created Teladan to connect people and systems for a healthier, more sustainable future.
More Than Garden Beds: Baton Health’s Broader Mission
We extend beyond food access to holistic well-being, community engagement, and education. Our key initiatives include:
- 🌿 Lifestyle as Medicine – Small-group coaching programs for sustainable health habits.
- 🍎 Food as Medicine – Education, meal preparation, and nutritional guidance.
- 💨 Breathe Well Initiative – Lung health, breathwork, and smoking cessation programs.
- 🏫 School & Workplace Wellness – Partnering with schools and businesses to promote preventative health.
- 🎗 Cancer Exercise Programs – Movement-based therapy for cancer patients.
- 🍽 Nourishing Kitchens – Helping families transform meals into medicine.
- 🙏 Faith-Based Wellness – Integrating nutrition and movement into faith communities.
What We’re Doing Right Now
- 🌱 Training local leaders to grow food year-round for sustainable access.
- 🏫 Partnering with schools, faith groups, and organizations to prioritize prevention.
- 👨👩👧 Helping families reclaim ownership of their health.
- 🏥 Collaborating with Washington State’s Be Well & Healthy Communities Initiative.
This is not just about access to healthy food. It’s about rebuilding our connection to the land, our bodies, and each other.
We have a choice.
We can wait—hoping things change.
Or we can step forward—together.
At Baton Health®, we are not just creating programs—we are building a movement.
A movement that grows stronger with every person, every family, and every community that joins in.
So, I want to ask you:
Will you carry the baton?
Will you help create a future where health isn’t something we wait for, but something we own, share, and pass forward?
Because health belongs to all of us.
Because love is not passive. Love is action. Love is connection.
And it is the only fight worth having.
With gratitude,
Lisa McAndrew Marquart
